"Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, hard work by all the Members of this House has enabled us to reach the final vote on agricultural product quality schemes.
The outcome of the negotiations with the Council is excellent, in my view. The
rule, the new possibilities for labelling and the amendments to the annex – which allow further products, such as chocolate, access to EU quality marks – are just a few examples. There is just one regrettable fact, Commissioner, which is that the Council refused to agree to production planning by protection cooperatives, which has left a rather bitter taste in the mouth.
You may be sure, Commissioner, that this Parliament will propose the subject again during the forthcoming reform of the common agricultural policy, not least so as to avoid differential treatment compared with other production sectors that have already secured such recognition. Tomorrow we will all – including myself – vote against the amendment which, although it seems acceptable – is in fact too late to be assessed positively."@en1
