"Mr President, I am listening to this debate with increasing amazement. We have had a couple of similar debates in Parliament previously, first about the situation in Italy, then the situation in Hungary and now that in Romania. It has become
clear how the cards are being placed on the table. On this occasion, Mr Weber from the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) praised Ms Reding to the skies in terms of the investigation that she is carrying out in Romania and Mr Swoboda says that the popularity of the Romanian President is suffering a huge setback as a result.
We are taking sides and that is happening because we have still not laid down a basic rule, namely that the Copenhagen criteria should also apply to countries that are already members of the European Union. We keep stealing a march on each other in this House and suggesting that these are party political debates because we are refusing to assess people in terms of how they need to be assessed.
My question is: if the elections are held on 9 December, will the results of the investigations by Ms Reding come before us in time? Or should we just wait for those elections without any further facts and look on as these undemocratic trends unfold?"@en1
