"I voted in favour of this directive which aims to provide basic rights to victims of robbery, assault, rape, harassment, terrorist attack or human trafficking throughout the European Union. Each year, nearly one in six Europeans is the victim of a serious crime. However, the treatment and protection of victims tended to vary greatly from one country to another. It was time to fill this gap in human rights and rectify this legal loophole.
Specifically: whether someone is a victim of a road accident in the south of France, a robbery on the streets of Milan, London or Berlin, or is assaulted (robbery, burglary, rape, harassment, hate crime, terrorist attack or human trafficking), each victim will be afforded the same level of protection. We have also included a guarantee to provide assistance when information regarding the release of the offender is presented to the victim; the painful legal developments in Belgium this September further highlight the crucial need for support for victims at this time …"@en1
