"The Commission’s proposal to draw up a new directive will allow a comprehensive legal framework to be adopted that will offer all crime victims, regardless of their legal status or recognition, the broadest possible protection on EU territory. The Commission extended the rights of all victims of any crime to the minimum standards across the EU, and gives all victims, irrespective of their nationality or the place where the crime took place, the right to information, the right to understand and be understood, the right to interpreting and translation, and other rights, including acknowledgement of the definition of victim for immediate family members. The new directive should defend the rights of victims, but also create confidence among EU citizens in national and neighbouring judicial systems with regard to their harmonisation, and I personally fully support these steps."@en1
