"This directive is part of a package of legislative measures aimed at strengthening the rights, support and protection of victims of crime in the EU. The EU therefore needs an integrated and coordinated approach in this area in order to ensure that the rights and needs of victims of crime are respected and enforced in every aspect.
Minimum standards are therefore being established for cases in which crimes have been committed in the EU and for criminal cases arising in the EU, thus strengthening confidence in the criminal justice systems in all of the Member States, which should contribute to more effective judicial cooperation in a climate of mutual confidence, and should also promote a culture of fundamental rights in the EU. I therefore support this initiative, which should allow existing instruments to be strengthened and complemented. The fact that an agreement has been reached at first reading is also positive. I now hope that the Member States can do their part and proceed to a timely transposition over the next three years."@en1
