"Mr President, I am pleased that this motion for a resolution was adopted by the House. It is important that we have a coherent and clear strategy going forward so that fishermen can plan with better certainty for the investment that they put in.
The EU’s aquaculture sector, if properly managed on the basis of global sustainability, could, as the motion says, make a greater contribution to the needs of European society in terms of food security and quality, employment, environmental protection and the maintenance of dynamic and varied fishing and coastal communities.
Finally, as regards Ireland, I am particularly pleased that the resolution calls on the Commission to investigate the reduction in fish stocks owing to natural predators such as sea lions, seals and cormorants, and to draw up and implement management plans to regulate these populations in cooperation with the affected and relevant Member States."@en1
