"Mr President, I voted for this report, as the existing fishing quota system has brought to the spotlight the short-term concerns of the Member States, showing that the sustainability of the fisheries sector has become of secondary importance. Regionalising the common fisheries policy should be considered a solution for addressing the current shortcomings. The Commission must initiate long-term plans which should take into account, on the one hand, the needs of the Member States, and on the other hand, the need to preserve fish stocks.
Around 60% of the European fish stocks are being exploited beyond the maximum sustainability limit. This overexploitation is detrimental to other species as well, such as the dolphins in the Black Sea. Very often, they accidentally get caught in the fishing nets. In this regard, I have initiated a written declaration on the need to set up measures for the protection of the dolphins in the Black Sea."@en1
