"Mr President, at first glance, it does, of course, seem very logical and sensible only to remove those fish from the world’s oceans which have been replaced every year. However, we know that people are not always sensible, in particular in cases where they can delegate or hand over responsibility. Therefore, it is extremely important for us to come to an agreement on catch quotas and on protecting fish stocks all over the world. In order for this to function effectively, we also need to deal with those countries which, for whatever reason, are not prepared to comply with the requirements and the limits. Therefore, I am hugely grateful to the rapporteur for this report and have, of course, voted in favour of it. It is now up to the Commission to put in place suitable measures to allow us to negotiate with these countries and to make it clear to them that sustainable fishing is extremely important. It is not only about us or about the fish, but about the generations that follow us."@en1
