"Mr President, I am particularly happy that we have adopted the Directive on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime, and I very much support the EPP rapporteur, Teresa Jiménez-Becerril Barrio. From now on, women suffering domestic violence, children trapped in trafficking, innocent victims of terrorism and victims of all crimes will be able to have the same rights, regardless of the Member State where the crime has been committed and their nationality. We have set up clear common standards to ensure that each victim is treated with respect, dignity and without discrimination across the European Union. I welcome in particular the attention given to children and to people with special needs and that there will be an individual assessment of their vulnerability so as not to create first or second-class victims. In the Stockholm Programme we promised to have a Europe that is a community of rights for all citizens. This is a significant step in that direction and I look forward to continuing to work with colleagues to make it a reality."@en1
