"Mr President, you made a good speech, but European citizens do not want mere words; they want action. I would therefore like to know what the Commission is actually going to do to promote economic growth and job creation. As for fiscal standardisation, what will it do to prevent wealthy French people from moving to Belgium, or Portuguese entrepreneurs from moving to the Netherlands? Moreover, what does it think of the social pact proposed here by Ms Swoboda? Many questions remain to be answered.
As you know, we need more solidarity among the Member States, and more solidarity and fairness among citizens. However, words alone are not enough. Measures – concrete measures – are needed. It has also been said here that a new direction is needed. This is undoubtedly the case. More political intervention is needed too. However, how can this be implemented, Mr President? That is what citizens are expecting. The fact is that we need more leadership, more confidence, more Europe, more hope and more democracy, and the role of Parliament must therefore be strengthened."@en1
