"Mr President, Mr Barroso, I do not agree that we can only resolve our current problems and regain confidence in Europe by introducing new structures and new institutions: every day a new idea. We will gain confidence by showing that what we have done has had an impact, that people can have a sense of well-being in Europe and that there is real opportunity to create new jobs and a brighter future. Therefore, I recommend that we look a little more carefully at whether what we are doing really is effective. We should monitor the implementation of directives and ensure that structural reforms are put into effect in the Member States. Mr Swoboda has just made some very negative remarks about Germany and expressed his criticism of structural reforms. I would like to give him a small hint. The most effective structural reform in Germany was definitely the one which took place under a Social Democratic government and which led to today’s economic growth. What can we do specifically to promote competitiveness? Some time ago, Mr Tajani made a clever proposal that we should consider all the legislation that we enact here in the light of its effect on competitiveness. We do not always need a constant stream of new ideas, we just need concrete action."@en1
