"I would like to emphasise again today just how important it is for the victims of a wide range of crimes to receive appropriate protection and support during criminal proceedings, and for them to be treated with respect and dignity. It is no less important that they should be able to count on redress, justice and protection against the crimes being repeated, irrespective of the Member State where the crime took place, and whether or not the victim of the crime is a citizen of that country. All of this has been guaranteed in the directive on which the European Parliament will be voting tomorrow. The directive contains some clauses that are worthy of particular note: the introduction of a unified definition of ‘victim’, under which the status of victim is accorded not only to the people directly affected, but also to close family members; a definition of victims of ‘gender-based violence’ and ‘violence in close relationship’; the introduction of the solutions that are necessary to ensure effective coordination between authorities that provide support to victims through the creation of both formal and informal structures enabling the staff of courts, prosecution services and non-governmental organisations to work in a regulated manner and to ensure that victims have access to psychological counselling, legal assistance and translation and interpreting services free of charge. There is no doubt that this is a very important step towards harmonising law on a European level and it is, above all, an expression of real concern for citizens throughout Europe."@en1
