"I congratulate our fellow Member for the document that has been presented, which provides an excellent summary of the current challenges facing the fisheries sector. Furthermore, I would like to thank him for supporting the inclusion in this report of the provisions referring to the need for a new Regional Fisheries Management Organisation for the Black Sea. In actual fact, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is not an adequate framework for managing the Black Sea, and the European Commission needs to put into practice its earlier commitment to set up a Black Sea Advisory Council. Moreover, we need to step up the dialogue with the countries bordering the Black Sea, particularly with regard to the exploitation and conservation of fish stocks.
I am going to use this subject to touch on another point, which is the presence of a legislative vacuum regarding minimum landing sizes and minimum mesh sizes for nets for turbot. This year, Turkey blocked a decision on this matter from being adopted in the GFCM, providing an example to corroborate what has been stated so far."@en1
