"Mr President, sustainability must be a key criterion for the EU, regardless of whether fishing takes place in the Pacific, in the Indian Ocean or in the Atlantic. For certain highly migratory fish stocks, however, sustainable management will require cooperation between the countries exploiting the resources. When some countries choose to increase their own quotas off their own backs, it is at the cost of the resources that we are all dependent on and benefit from. It is therefore important that the EU has general, effective and reasonable incentives to counter overfishing and to promote our shared objective of healthy fish stocks the world over. For the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, it was crucial to have measures that are effective, but at the same time practicable under international trade law. We now have that, and it is a victory for sustainability."@en1
