"Madam President, this report calls for clearer political priorities and strategic lines, and I agree with it. At the same time, however, it does not seem to me that we are taking the same approach to the same problems. For example, we cannot advocate territorial integrity and an end to occupation for certain countries, but disregard the same thing in other countries. We must take the same approach with everyone. It is disgraceful that a country that is engaged in partnership with the EU is occupying territories of another country, and it is even worse that a number of resolutions on the withdrawal of the occupying troops are not being respected.
The other thing that I would like to insist on is clearer leadership with regard to the Balkans. Many of the Balkan states do not have sufficiently strong leadership, and so they rightly expect us to show this strong leadership. We cannot make the same mistake that we made at the beginning of the 1990s. We cannot just mediate; we also need to be able to lead. Otherwise, our position and the whole enlargement process could be put at risk."@en1
