"Madam President, the day before yesterday, a South African boer, Johan Fourie, and his wife, Cecile, were murdered in an horrific manner. The police are saying that this was one of the worst crime scenes they have ever seen.
The media in Europe are paying no attention to this, but Johan and Cecile Fourie are not merely isolated cases. Since the ANC came to power, more than 3 000 farmers have been murdered in South Africa. There is a pattern to these killings. They are usually accompanied by long hours of torture. There is usually little theft. So, it has nothing to do with poverty. These people are murdered simply because of who they are.
This is a political problem, because there are important forces in and around the ANC that are contributing to these killings. The government and the police are doing virtually nothing. The imminent land reform is threatening to exacerbate the situation still further. So, we need more than just a letter in order to address these issues. We need sanctions and we need measures."@en1
