"Madam President, may I thank Mr Brok and Baroness Ashton. As you are both aware, the Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left is a critical group that does not agree with the current direction being taken in the area of security and defence policy, because we believe that the time has come to begin a transition towards a model that brings about the demilitarisation of security in order to respond to what is creating insecurity in the world today. Firstly, there is hunger. Seventy thousand people die of hunger every day, while USD 4 billion a day is spent on armaments. Secondly, we have weapons of mass destruction, violence, unemployment and easily curable diseases. That is what we need to respond to in terms of security.
That response does not mean increasing military spending or obtaining more weapons and military alliances such as NATO, which can intervene outside the mandate of the United Nations Security Council and carry out campaigns of violence, as took place in Iraq.
It is important to listen to what our delegate said in her last report on the situation in Iraq, in order to understand that this is not the way forward. The way forward is to initiate a different, demilitarised process, in order to establish – through a redesigned United Nations – the true democratic world government, so as to meet that goal of achieving peace."@en1
