"I certainly consider investment in high-quality education and training to be investment in the competitiveness of the European economy. Rapidly changing labour market conditions require a flexible workforce that will be able to adapt to an ever greater variety of jobs in order to secure high-quality and sustainable employment. Member States must also, however, seek ways to balance labour market supply and demand in the various sectors of the national economy. In this regard, I support the modernisation of training programmes in sectors that do not enjoy universal popularity among the younger generations in particular, but the demands of society require a regular supply of qualified workers. These include, for example, technical areas, the area of research and innovation, and the energy sector, which should be promoted more and made more attractive in the minds of people. In my opinion, an education and training programme should also encompass the traditional crafts that are our cultural heritage, in order to prevent their gradual disappearance and total loss."@en1
