"Mr President, the last weeks have seen an eruption of sectarian rioting and attacks in Belfast. These incidents unfortunately demonstrate that the peace process and the establishment of power-sharing institutions have failed to end sectarian division on the ground. In fact, there are now more so-called peace lines dividing communities than there were before the paramilitary ceasefires.
Instead of eradicating division, the Northern Ireland Assembly has actually institutionalised it. The main parties cannot eradicate the poison of sectarianism because they rely on that division to maintain their power.
One thing that unites the Assembly parties is their support for austerity. They are embarking on a vicious campaign of cuts to public services which are already leading to rising unemployment and poverty – conditions which precisely provide the breeding ground for the rise and growth of sectarianism.
There is an urgent need for the building of a new mass working class party, based on the trade union movement and genuine community groups and young people, to unite working class people against sectarian division, against the right-wing policies of the Assembly Executive and for socialist change."@en1
