"Madam President, food security is one of the European public’s concerns and we have to guarantee it. Consumer information should be clear and objective, and the result of a simple, unbureaucratic process. The labelling of beef is clearly important and should prevent the proliferation of erroneous information given to consumers about sensitive issues such as the breed of the animals and the way in which they were created, as well as the way in which the meat is processed. The regulation of information given to the consumer must address these issues.
Beef is an extremely sensitive product in relation to the EU market, and it is highly subject to pressure from third countries, which have less stringent requirements in terms of animal well-being and systems of production. The same provisions must apply to imported products.
I believe that the labelling system should be improved, but with concrete rules and a clear and fair monitoring system for all of the Member States. This should be done within an EU system that is able to prevent different levels of performance, which supports distortions in competitiveness. I also consider that this system should be made obligatory for all of the Member States, similar to the current system for poultry meat and eggs."@en1
