"The conflict between Israel and Palestine has dragged on since 1967, when Palestinian territory was occupied by Israel. Despite all the efforts by international organisations such as the UN Security Council and the European Union, amongst others, there is no end in sight. Apart from recognising that this is a very delicate situation and that, accordingly, it demands an extremely thoughtful approach, it is urgent to bring an end to the violence in the region and the great suffering and human tragedy it causes. The political changes in the Arab world have made peace in the Middle East possible, but the latest missile attacks on Gaza, the housing demolitions, the persecution of the impoverished Bedouin community and the demolition of two schools by Israel overshadow the relationship between the two states, undermine the climate of trust and make a peaceful solution more difficult. I voted against this motion for a resolution presented by four colleagues, on behalf of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, as the proposed measures do not reflect my views and I do not believe that they deal with this very sensitive situation with the impartiality that it deserves."@en1
