"In voting in favour of this report, I was keen to stress that direct negotiations leading to a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians ‘should be resumed without delay and according to the deadlines called for by the Quartet in order to overcome the unacceptable status quo’. I also considered it important to remind people that all the settlements are illegal under international law and that construction must cease and dismantling begin. As regards the Gaza Strip, it is clear that Israel must implement an effective control mechanism to prevent arms smuggling to the Gaza Strip."@en1
