"− I voted in favour of this report, as I think that animal protection is important. It goes without saying that we should treat our animals with respect. We should show consideration for producers and small businesses and not create additional red tape and administrative costs. Swedish producers must be able to compete on equal terms, and we need a common regulatory framework and high standards throughout Europe. It is important that we have clear common rules that do not mislead producers. This report is important because we need to reduce the use of antibiotics in our animal husbandry. In the United States, for example, more antibiotics are used on animals than on people. If we can provide tolerable conditions for our animals, we can also reduce the spread of infection and, in the long term, reduce our dependence on antibiotics. I hope that we will start to realise the seriousness of these issues in future, and I am therefore pleased that the report addresses the link between animal protection, the spread of infection and transmissible diseases. I am also pleased that the report emphasises the need for the implementation of existing legislation rather than the creation of new rules. Many countries have still not managed to introduce the rules that already exist, and this creates different conditions for competition on our single market."@en1
