"In 2005, global trade in counterfeit goods totalled USD 200 billion, not including digital products, according to OECD estimates. For the first time, on 1 October 2011, 22 Member States signed an Agreement with eight countries from the United States to Morocco, including Japan and South Korea, to put an end to trade in counterfeit goods, which threatens the economic viability of businesses and consumer safety.
We need to be aware of the historic importance of this Agreement. However, concerns were raised about respect for the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. It would have been sensible to wait for the opinion of the Court of Justice of the European Union, which is the most appropriate authority for dealing with this issue. It was with this in mind that I voted to postpone the vote. Unfortunately, the other political groups felt that the Court’s opinion was not needed to decide the fate of the text. In this context, I decided to base my vote on the positive opinions of Parliament’s Legal Service and to vote in favour of greater protection for intellectual property in global trade."@en1
