"The fight against counterfeiting is a priority. Europe’s economy and the health of its consumers is at stake. The Court of Justice of the European Union was asked to rule on the Agreement’s compatibility with citizens’ rights, so I believe that it was entirely senseless to reject it so hastily. That is why I voted for the report, first and foremost. Unfortunately, it was rejected by a large majority of 420 votes. Secondly, I chose to support the Agreement because, after a detailed analysis, I felt that it respected the fundamental rights of our fellow citizens. The vote provoked aggressive reactions towards MEPs who voted yes, including me. That aggressiveness, through intimidation and anonymity, is unacceptable. I would therefore ask my critics to examine the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement properly from the point of view of the protection of intellectual property but also the protection of individual freedoms. Finally, I would like to reiterate, on the one hand, that the very essence of democracy is freedom of thought and expression and to state, on the other, that votes are never imperative."@en1
