I voted in favour of this agreement because unintended consequences of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) text are a serious concern. The benefits of this international agreement are far outweighed by the potential threats to civil liberties. Given the vagueness of certain aspects of the text and the uncertainty over its interpretation, the European Parliament cannot guarantee adequate protection for citizens’ rights in the future under the ACTA. I do not therefore welcome the conclusion of the ACTA. It should be noted that not only the Committee on International Trade, but four other parliamentary committees, which prepared an opinion on this issue, refused to consent to this agreement."@en1
