"Mr President, holding a bank account is a prerequisite for fully participating in economic and social life. This will enable consumers to enjoy all the benefits provided by the internal market, especially the freedom of movement.
I should point out that, in spite of this, as my fellow Member, Mr Tarabella, also mentioned, there are currently around 30 million people still without a bank account. These consumers have to pay higher costs because they use cash excessively. This is why I consider it important to promote financial and social inclusion for consumers throughout the whole of Europe. This will make it possible to improve considerably the lives of several million Europeans. It is important to end practices which exclude people from accessing such a basic service."@en1
