"Rapidly developing new technologies, including the Internet, need to be regulated in new ways at European level, and this is obvious to all of us. However, an attempt to combine the fight against piracy and counterfeiting with preserving freedom on the Internet, such as the one put forward in the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, has drawn opposition in many circles. I shall be voting against ACTA. I do think intellectual property rights should be protected. We must also settle certain matters relating to the Internet. However, this must be done in a way which is clear and is acceptable to a variety of groups in society. This cannot be done either by adding a provision which is mainly about counterfeit goods but which otherwise is unrelated to the agreement as a whole. It is certainly the case that the matters which ACTA has attempted to solve do have to be solved, but not in the way ACTA tries to do. We need to keep working on unsolved problems, but as well as consulting with legal experts, we also need to take on board the views of a variety of other groups in society. A new document, arrived at by negotiation, will certainly be accepted by Parliament."@en1
