"Should intellectual property be protected? It most certainly should. Does the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement provide the right protection? No. It is very important for Europe that intellectual property be protected. Knowledge is an area in which we can still enjoy a competitive advantage in world terms. We ought to remember this. This does not mean we have to accept every proposal or every agreement. It is true that the Commission has asked the European Court of Justice for its opinion on ACTA. Regardless of the legal opinion, we as Parliament are entitled to make a political evaluation. We can reject ACTA. After all, even a positive verdict from the ECJ will not change the way many Europeans feel threatened by the agreement. By rejecting ACTA, we will make it possible to close this chapter and start again. I do not believe ACTA can be improved. It is better to start again than to try to repair something which cannot be repaired. It is a waste of time."@en1
