"Mr President, following today’s debate, I am much more convinced that ACTA is being politically misused. It is about rallying political support, regardless of the consequences, for unprotected intellectual property in the EU.
It is mainly the negative aspects of ACTA that have been highlighted today. We have not talked about what is good about this agreement and why we need it. I am thinking of the safety aspects and the loss of EUR 8 billion a year and what that ultimately means for jobs in the European Union, because we know that an awful lot of people, especially young people, are unemployed.
I take seriously concerns about human rights violations and, because of this, I think we should wait for the decision of the European Court of Justice. In fact, I am appalled at the total distrust that exists in this regard, because there are many people who apparently do not trust the experts in the Member States involved in the preparation of this agreement. They do not trust Commissioner De Gucht and they are saying that we do not actually need the European Court of Justice.
Tomorrow, we will be deciding on the basis of emotion and gut feeling, not on the basis of expert opinions."@en1
