"Mr President, I think we are all well aware that calling into doubt the text of an international agreement that has been agreed upon by many countries of the world is possible only if its provisions exhibit such shortcomings that it is not appropriate to bring it to the light of day. Throughout the entire preparation period of this agreement, the European Parliament acted responsibly and sought to coordinate with the Commission at the preparation stage. However, the Commission concluded that there is no need to consult on such matters with European citizens’ representatives and today calls on us to endorse the text against which the European public is clearly rebelling. Your appeal to us to act responsibly is, Commissioner, inapt. This is because you acted irresponsibly when preparing ACTA as you went ahead with its ratification without proper communication with the public. However, if you feel, Commissioner, that you have done your work well, please respect the fact that the European Parliament has the right to voice the opinion of the citizens on the work that you have done so well."@en1
