"Mr President, people are watching what we do and trust that we will listen to them. Very few of us are in the Chamber. Our responsibility is to take a political decision here tomorrow. People have given us a clear message that they do not want ACTA. They are afraid, and rightly so, of encroachment on their rights. We are confused – there is too little clarity. We want to fight against product counterfeiting and bolster intellectual property protection, but we need more creative and effective ways of doing so. The European Court of Justice should not be an excuse for delaying decisions. Five parliamentary committees have rejected this international agreement. For Parliament, it is very clear that ACTA should be dropped. The agreement has not been agreed democratically and transparently. The people of Europe are worried about ACTA rather than expecting it to effectively protect rights or curb online piracy. Let me conclude with a thought by a well-known Slovenian Internet strategist at a conference in Brussels. ‘ACTA protects those who are stuck in the cave paintings era’. That is why we have to say ‘no’ to ACTA tomorrow."@en1
