"Mr President, there are many reasons for rejecting this treaty and these have been highlighted throughout the debate. Furthermore, having an international agreement on counterfeiting that does not include China and India is like signing a maritime treaty between landlocked countries. Finally, it is unacceptable to support a vague treaty from which the authors have deliberately excluded all democratic bodies since the beginning of the procedure.
All of these reasons raise questions for me, too. Why are several Members of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), particularly this morning, still counting on postponing tomorrow’s vote on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA)? They are flogging a dead horse! Mr Fjellner was today’s example.
The PPE Group replied to me this morning on Twitter saying that it wants to hear the opinion of the Court of Justice. I replied – but I had already been expecting this remark – that it was comical, bizarre, alarming even, that Commissioner de Gucht should be questioning the legality of the treaty that he had signed by asking for the opinion of the Court after the event.
That is why tomorrow, we will vote against this treaty, which is, unfortunately, a bad answer to a good question, the question of counterfeiting."@en1
