"Mr President, Commissioner, I would like to remind you that, during the Industrial Revolution in England, the Luddites smashed their machines because they were afraid that they would destroy jobs. Nowadays, we must not end up in a situation where we restrict the Internet, which is the medium for the new technological revolution, because we do not know what we need to take into consideration in every aspect.
Legislation which operates in the real world obviously relates to the Internet environment as well. It goes without saying that it also needs to be adapted to it. However, this must happen without any constraint on its development.
I am opposed to ACTA for two reasons. The first reason is that it imposes responsibility for content on the Internet service providers. This will make the Internet much more difficult to access and more expensive, and it can turn into a dangerous weapon in the hands of two democratic governments. The second reason is that ACTA will not resolve the intellectual property issues. They will be resolved in a completely different way, including by changing business models."@en1
