"Mr President, intellectual property rights must be protected, but ACTA is not the solution. Even though much of the criticism of ACTA is based on myths and fallacies relating to an early draft put forward for negotiation, it is clear that the agreement has significant shortcomings. When we vote against it tomorrow, as we most likely will, I do not see it as the end, but the beginning of new efforts to achieve really good protection for intellectual property, but we must do this on a sectoral basis, considering each sector separately, so that we can safeguard respect for intellectual property rights all around the world while, at the same time, protecting human rights and freedoms. We need to show our citizens that it is entirely possible to create these sector-specific agreements with complete transparency for citizens and in dialogue with civil society. As the ancient Romans said: the play is over."@en1
