"Mr President, one thing is quite clear. Anything that is worth nothing will not be stolen. Therefore, it is very important for us to make every effort to reach a good compromise in this debate. We are aware that various things need to be brought up-to-date. Copyright regulations need to be adapted to the new digital world. We understand the value of European cultural assets. Whether it can provide a livelihood for artists, journalists and authors will depend on the question of whether content will, in future, be paid for directly by consumers who value it and want to have it or whether it will only be possible to fund the content via advertising and promotions, in order to give artists and journalists an opportunity to earn a fair living.
I believe that we also need to revise the e-Commerce Directive. We need to answer simple questions such as: Is it possible to sell a product for less than the introductory price? What is the situation with price labelling on the Internet? How can we create certainty for our citizens with regard to copyright issues? I believe that the Commission and Parliament still have a great deal of work to do on drawing up the necessary regulations. I would like to know what the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) will actually achieve, and this point has already been made today, if China, India and Brazil are not included."@en1
