"Mr President, ACTA is a dangerous agreement, a monstrosity that puts Internet freedom at risk. Europe has always been the part of the world where the freedom of people to accumulate knowledge was the foremost concern. In this respect, the Internet is a source of creativity, innovation and information exchange.
If we adopted ACTA, we would be putting paid to these achievements. A government that spies on its own citizens on the Internet not only undermines the privacy of its citizens; it directly attacks Internet freedom and freedom of expression. These fundamental freedoms can never, and should never, be compromised.
Meanwhile, the Commission is deaf to all criticism, as usual. Citizens and interest groups may be protesting, but that is of no concern for the Commission. After years of backroom politics and secrecy, the Commission is now falling back on manipulation and delaying tactics. We cannot imagine a grosser breach of democratic principles.
Mr President, the Commission may bend over backwards, but it is not allowed to, nor will it, meddle with freedom of the Internet. Down with this terrible agreement!"@en1
