"Mr President, first of all, I should like to say to the Commission that it is entirely legitimate for Parliament to do its work here and that, contrary to what you might think, the Commission will have to listen to our Parliament’s position tomorrow.
I will not go back over questions regarding vagueness, ambiguity, public freedom and civil society being connected to the digital world; all of this has been said in our Chamber and I agree with what has been said.
I simply want to return to a question which, in my view, is a question of effectiveness. How can the Commission be satisfied with an agreement that is supposed to combat counterfeiting which leaves out the two biggest producers of counterfeit goods in the world, China and India?
I would remind you that, according to figures from 2010, 85% of counterfeit goods come from China and 93% of counterfeit medicines come from India.
If this agreement is rejected, and I think and I hope that it will be rejected tomorrow, the Commission will have to adopt an aggressive position in order to implement a new agreement with China and India within the framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and within the framework of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)."@en1
