"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, ACTA is a response to a general awareness of the damage caused by counterfeit goods in terms of the health and safety of our fellow citizens. European businesses lose EUR 250 billion each year, while 100 000 jobs are lost every year. Ultimately, ACTA does not establish new intellectual property rights, it is simply a question of the proportional implementation (see Article 6) of measures intended to combat the counterfeiting of physical goods.
Article 27, the only article on the digital environment, has sparked a campaign of misinformation on the Internet and has misled public opinion, leading people to believe that there would be so-called ‘individual criminalisation’ or controls on Internet service providers.
That is why I am calling on my fellow Members to be reasonable and courageous and to vote in the interest of our European economy and to not bow to pressure from the street. We must vote for ACTA as we did last year in the interest of the 38 signatory countries first and foremost, but also because it sets an example to countries such as China or India, which seemed to worry those opposed to ACTA."@en1
