"Mr President, let us get right to the point. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) will encourage web blocks and measures for monitoring the Internet. It will put data protection and the secrecy of communications at risk. The vague wording of the agreement reads more like a political statement of intent than a contract under international law. These are the reasons why four of the committees in this House have already voted against it. I would like to warn everyone against adopting the agreement or postponing the vote tomorrow. That would result in a massive loss of confidence in this House.
I will vote against the agreement because I support the interests of users and consumers and also fundamental rights. It is also worth mentioning that if we vote against the agreement tomorrow, this will represent a huge victory for civil society. It was the protests that made the drastic change of opinion in Parliament possible. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved.
I want to conclude by making one brief comment to Mr De Gucht. I would like to ask him and also to call on him to be aware of the vote tomorrow and not to become involved in any democratic manoeuvring."@en1
