"Madam President, I would like to say thank you to all my fellow Members and everyone listening out there in Europe. For those of us who have been involved in the information policy debate for a long time, the decision that this House will take tomorrow is not only symbolic of what is right and proper in the information age, it is also crucial for European democracy. Communication and culture build societies. It is no surprise, therefore, that ACTA was the issue that generated the pan-European debate that caught our attention and that caused many people to consider how we as a society actually want to deal with communication. It was on this very issue that I and many others in my political party, the Pirate Party, found a reason for our involvement in politics. The problem is that the agreement does not change anything. We need more access to culture and communication. How do we actually want to relate to other people? How do we build a sense of community and familiarity with other people? All of us who consider these questions and who are helping to build these communities hope that Parliament will be strong when it takes the decision tomorrow – we hope that Parliament will listen to all of Europe’s citizens when they speak with one voice because our societies need to be founded on the values of the citizens. It is clear that citizens’ values involve making communication and cultural exchange a priority and an opportunity for the future, and that is something that I and my political group here in Parliament, together with many other colleagues from other political groups, will recognise in the votes tomorrow."@en1
