With this document, the European Parliament has again expressed its support for the European aspirations and reforms of the countries of the Eastern partnership (EaP). The EU is not only aiming to establish an area of close political cooperation but a stable, transparent and predictable area of economic cooperation. Mutual efforts are required to establish such a trade area and I am therefore pleased that in many respects, things are moving forward as regards the conclusion of DCFTA agreements. Trade policy is one of the most effective instruments for promoting reforms. It is not an aid instrument and it is therefore very important for EaP countries to continue to make every effort to facilitate the conclusion of such agreements. On the other hand, tendencies contrary to the EU’s goals are being observed in this region. It is regrettable that to some, it still seems that an area of stability, transparency, sustainable development and democracy goes against someone’s interests."@en1
