"Trade is a vitally important aspect of the EU’s relations with the countries in the Eastern partnership. Trade agreements are crucial instruments for building long-term economic relations with our Eastern partners and help promote economic reforms, the rule of law and social and environmental standards on our doorstep. I think that our Eastern partners cannot achieve economic integration with the EU effectively without political and social reforms and without civil society being involved in the decision-making process and economic integration being achieved even among the Eastern partners, a point actually emphasised as well by the report. The report also notes that national parliaments have an important role to play as well in harmonising trade legislation with the EU
which is a prerequisite for concluding and implementing future agreements properly. There are countries in the Eastern partnership which have made remarkable progress, such as the Republic of Moldova. The report recognises with satisfaction that Moldova, despite the fragility of its economy, has, in recent years, undergone a remarkable reform process and hugely improved its economic performance. This highlights, in this regard, the vital importance of the financial assistance provided by the International Monetary Fund and the macro-financial assistance provided by the EU. These are some of the reasons why I support this report."@en1
