"It is a cliché to say that trading partners do not go to war. Moreover, it is a cliché that does not even reflect the truth. Nonetheless, the truth is that conflicts between these sorts of partners tend to be fewer and the partners often aim to exhaust means of dialogue before resorting to war. Following years of tension on their eastern borders due to the Cold War and the Sovietisation of the region, it is reassuring to note that, despite the differences and disparities between the EU and its Eastern partners, there is a willingness today to prioritise trade issues and to seek an increasingly close relationship which is productive for all parties. It will not do to ignore the fact that there is still a long way to go, in particular, with regard to issues of democracy, human rights and combating corruption and violence, but it is right to acknowledge the work that has been done and some successes that have been achieved. I hope that this partnership will develop to the satisfaction of all parties, and that it will enable economic growth for all and closer relations between the different peoples and cultures, with respect for their respective identities."@en1
