"Despite continually rising youth unemployment, no measures are in evidence which might change the situation. There is a lack of special programmes to help young people, and not just at European level, because specific and effective measures are also lacking at national level. Europe faces the problem of an ageing society and, in a few years’ time, this is going to be a serious social and economic problem. The low level of economic growth and the high costs of labour are discouraging investment in this part of Europe. I think we need to react quickly to these worrying signs. We need to make the European market more attractive, because the regions have a great deal of untapped potential which is often not even noticed. Cohesion policy should be the key to solving macro-economic and regional problems, leading to higher competitiveness and economic growth in the regions and the creation of much-needed new jobs, in particular, for young people. I think the Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou report on the attractiveness of investing in Europe is a good one, so I voted in favour of its adoption."@en1
