"Parliament has just laid the bases for the deployment of eCall, an innovative system that is able automatically to alert the emergency services within the EU in the event of a car accident. I wish to see technology neutrality. This is a prerequisite for an effective system capable of supporting innovation. Whilst some manufacturers have already adopted comparable systems, I see no value in our making them incompatible with eCall. Let us avoid a war amongst the lobbies to impose a system when so many lives are at stake. If eCall must be technology neutral, it must also be financially neutral. This innovation cannot be achieved to the detriment of the consumer. The system aims to be general and obligatory. In these circumstances, we cannot impose an unreasonable cost on future buyers. I also think it is essential to introduce the conditions for free and fair competition to avoid the appearance of unfair charges. I therefore supported this recommendation in order to introduce this innovative system in the best manner possible. The era of free movement has become a reality in Europe; safety must not stop at the borders. Europe must continue to be a leader in road safety matters."@en1
