"I abstained from the report, although my own country is one of the pioneers of this solution. Although reducing road accidents and saving lives is a priority for me, it is obvious that nothing comes for free in this world, and somebody always has to pick up the bill. The proposal in Articles 9 and 39 for eCall to be free of charge is therefore problematic, as it suggests that, in the case of new vehicles, calls would be payment-free – where there is no problem because they are free already – and so would the equipment. In view of the fact that someone will have to pay for it, we will see either a further assault on public finances or higher prices for vehicles, if the burden is transferred to car makers, who will pass it on. The issue of possible costs for the emergency services from false alarms is also rather problematic, a fact pointed out by the rapporteurs themselves. I therefore support the eCall service, but I would like a clear statement on who will pay and from what source."@en1
