"Road accidents are still one of the major causes of death and injury, not only in the European Union but throughout the world, and this at a time when technological developments are able to guarantee leading-edge, quality services in the fields of road safety and immediate intervention. This is the case with eCall, a system that sends emergency calls to answering point operators which will allow rapid assistance in case of accidents and which is closely linked with 112, the European emergency number.
I welcome the attention the text pays to the free and universally accessible nature of the eCall system as a public service, whilst taking into account the various categories of vehicles and the needs of drivers, including disabled drivers, as well as the importance it attaches to data protection and the privacy of the beneficiaries, with their prior agreement."@en1
