"I voted in favour of this report in order to strengthen the protection of European citizens. The EU does so much for free movement within the Member States, and we have to make this movement safe. I regret that many Member States have not yet joined the eCall system. It is a joint project and all European citizens have the right to the same level of protection, regardless of their nationality. The improvement in the response of the European emergency services will permit up to 2 500 lives to be saved annually and to reduce the severity of injuries by 10-15%. Therefore, I support the rapporteur, who calls on the Commission to make legally binding decisions on that issue. I join the colleagues who are concerned about respect for the privacy of the people who have the eCall system installed. The system should not be allowed to track the movement of cars. Only information on the exact place of the accident is necessary for intervention in case of emergency."@en1
