"More than 39 000 lives are lost and more than 1.2 million passengers are injured every year in road accidents across the EU. These alarming statistics point to the fact that road safety concerns all EU citizens. Our task is therefore to support proposals that would reduce the death rate in road accidents and would constitute a step forward in ensuring road safety. The eCall system is a modern, intelligent traffic safety system, the role of which is to automatically call the emergency services in the event of an accident without the driver, who may be injured or unconscious, having to lift a finger. The speedy and timely intervention of the emergency services is often crucial. In the case of serious injuries, every minute counts. The eCall system represents a major challenge for the transport policies of the EU Member States. In view of the time that the EU has spent since 2003 trying to develop a system in detail, it is high time for it to be finally harmonised across all Member States. The only downside may be the slightly higher costs when purchasing a vehicle, but one must realise that in mass production, it would be a marginal amount which is negligible compared to the number of lives saved."@en1
